There are higher rates of mental disorders in people with intellectual disability, estimated at 2-3 times the general population.
We encourage active participation, if possible, for the individual, in the process. It is most helpful if information about the current concerns and changed behaviours, baseline functioning, prior cognitive testing and prior interventions is provided. This ensures that the best management plan is developed collaboratively. This collaboration is best with input from carers, decision-makers, disability services and non-government stake-holders to ensure the best assessment and management is undertaken.
Melville Clinic has completed core competencies in this complex area.
Please note that Melville Clinic is a service principally for adults, focusing on 17-70yo, and we do not see children.
