The development of enduring and inflexible patterns of thinking and behaviour can lead to significant distress and poor functioning. This can have its origin early in life but can be further complicated by difficult adult experiences. When severe enough, these pervasive and maladaptive patterns are diagnosed as personality disorders, negatively impacting self-esteem, relationships, employment, safety and quality of life.
Deliberate self harm requires a compassionate response. Our goal is to promote safety, reduce repetition and to target the underlying difficulties and expectations, to move towards recovery.
Psychotherapy, or talking therapies, are the main treatment to learn new ways of thinking, responding and acting. The type of psychotherapy can be varied, and can include individual or group therapies. Melville Clinic has access to recommended group therapies. We are happy to provide individual psychotherapy or work with your community psychologist, understanding that often the long-term approach is needed. Sometimes medication is warranted, particularly if additional psychiatric disorders are present, commonly anxiety, depression and addictions.
A strong alliance with your doctor is essential. We promise to work with you and your family with respect, trust, empathy and clear communication.
